Major Ski Resorts Elsewhere in Hokkaido (Beyond Sapporo)

While Sapporo’s local ski resorts are ideal for easy day trips, Hokkaido is also home to some of Japan’s most famous destination ski resorts.

Niseko: Niseko is Hokkaido’s most internationally known ski destination. It consists of four connected ski areas, Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village, and Annupuri, all located on Mt. Annupuri. Niseko is famous for its light, dry powder snow, large and varied terrain, lively après ski scene, and a single lift pass that allows access to all four areas.

Rusutsu Resort: Rusutsu Resort is located about 40 minutes from Niseko and is one of the largest independent ski resorts in Hokkaido. Its slopes are spread across three mountains and offer excellent snow quality and a wide variety of runs. Rusutsu is also known for its family friendly atmosphere, non skiing activities, and well developed lift system.

Kiroro Ski Resort: Located near Otaru, Kiroro Ski Resort receives some of the highest snowfall in Hokkaido. The resort is known for its soft powder snow and relatively quiet slopes compared to larger destinations. Kiroro offers a good balance of intermediate and advanced terrain, along with comfortable resort hotels that feature onsen and spa facilities.

Furano Ski Resort: Furano Ski Resort is located in central Hokkaido and is known for its long, well groomed runs and beautiful views of the Daisetsuzan mountain range. The resort has terrain suitable for all skill levels, and the nearby town of Furano adds a relaxed atmosphere with local restaurants and accommodations, making it a great option for longer stays.

Tomamu (Hoshino Resorts Tomamu): Tomamu is situated between Sapporo and Furano and is a modern, purpose built resort. It offers a good mix of beginner, intermediate, and advanced slopes. Tomamu is especially popular with families thanks to its wide range of attractions, including an indoor wave pool and the famous Unkai Terrace, where visitors can enjoy views above the clouds. The resort also offers convenient on site accommodations.

Kamui Ski Links (Asahikawa Area): Kamui Ski Links is located near Asahikawa in northern Hokkaido and is one of the largest ski areas in the region. It is popular for its tree runs, powder snow, and scenic mountain views. The resort appeals to skiers and snowboarders who enjoy a mix of groomed trails and more natural terrain.

Asahidake (Daisetsuzan National Park): For experienced skiers and snowboarders looking for a more adventurous experience, Asahidake offers big mountain terrain and deep powder snow. Located within Daisetsuzan National Park, this area has a very long snow season and focuses more on natural, backcountry style skiing rather than marked runs. The scenery and snow conditions are among the best in Hokkaido.

Many of these resorts provide direct shuttle buses from New Chitose Airport and offer convenient travel packages for visitors planning multi-day ski holidays.

Overall, these destination ski resorts offer much larger terrain, full resort services, and on site accommodations compared to Sapporo’s city ski areas. However, they usually require longer travel times from Sapporo, often two to three hours or more, and are better suited for overnight stays.

Why Sapporo’s Local Ski Resorts Are So Convenient

One of the things that makes Sapporo stand out as a winter destination is how easy it is to go skiing without ever leaving the city. Unlike many ski areas in Japan, you don’t need to plan a separate trip or stay in a remote resort town to enjoy good snow.

Visitors can base themselves in central Sapporo, stay in regular city hotels, and still reach ski slopes by public transportation, using buses provides by the ski resorts, or a short taxi ride. This makes it easy to fit skiing into a busy travel schedule, whether that means a half day on the slopes, an evening of night skiing, or even a quick session after work.

With resorts like Teine, Moiwa, and Bankei, skiers and snowboarders have access to a wide range of terrain just 20 to 60 minutes from downtown.
